How to play Compass
Find a five-letter word using alphabetic direction clues in each position.
The idea
Compass is a five-letter deduction game with six valid guesses. Every letter position is judged independently. An arrow tells you whether the target letter in that same position comes earlier or later in the alphabet, while a filled result marks an exact match.
Rules, step by step
- Enter a recognised five-letter word.
- Read each position separately: right means the target letter is later toward Z, left means it is earlier toward A, and a filled square is exact.
- Use the new bounds to choose another valid five-letter word.
- Invalid words do not use an attempt; accepted guesses cannot be repeated.
- Solve all five positions within six valid guesses.
Worked example
Suppose the hidden word is TIGER and the guess is HORSE.
- At position one, T comes later than H, so the clue points toward Z.
- At position two, I comes earlier than O, so the clue points toward A.
- Repeat that comparison independently for all five positions. A letter appearing elsewhere in the word has no effect.
Strategy
- Think of the puzzle as five small alphabet searches happening at the same time.
- Choose early guesses with letters near the middle of the alphabet to divide the possible range in each position.
- Keep exact letters fixed while choosing a real word that tests useful letters in the remaining positions.
- Do not use Wordle logic: Compass never signals a correct letter in the wrong position.
Finishing the game
The result records how many valid guesses you used. If six guesses are exhausted, the target is revealed.
