How to play Link
Find one connector that forms a recognised relationship with both visible ends.
The idea
Link is a compact word-association puzzle. You are given a left anchor and a right anchor, and one missing connector sits between them. The connector may create common phrases, compound words, titles or another clearly curated relationship on both sides.
Rules, step by step
- Read the two visible anchors as “left — ? — right”.
- Think of a word or short phrase that connects naturally with the left anchor and also with the right anchor.
- Enter the connector shown by the answer blanks.
- You have three guesses. A wrong guess reveals another letter.
- Hints are optional and reduce your score when used.
Worked example
For “APPLE — ? — PIE”, one possible connector is CRUMBLE.
- “Apple crumble” is a familiar dessert.
- “Crumble pie” describes a pie with a crumble topping.
- Because CRUMBLE makes a recognised connection on both sides, it completes the link.
Strategy
- Try the most common phrase that follows the left anchor, then test whether the same word works before the right anchor.
- Reverse the process if the right-hand phrase is easier to recognise.
- Pay attention to the blank length; it can separate a promising connector from a near miss.
- Do not settle for a connection that works on only one side. Both relationships must be conventional enough to be recognised.
Finishing the game
At the end, the puzzle reveals the accepted connector and explains both relationships.
