How to play Lockstep
Guide two pieces to matching goals when every arrow moves both at once.
The idea
Lockstep is a spatial-logic puzzle with two pieces, A and B, and two matching goals. Every arrow command applies to both pieces simultaneously. Walls and board edges can stop one piece while the other continues, letting you change their relative positions.
Rules, step by step
- Use an arrow to move both pieces one square in the same direction.
- If a wall or board edge blocks one piece, it stays still while the other may move.
- Pieces cannot finish on the same square or swap places in one move.
- Use Undo to test an idea or Restart to return to the opening position; neither action costs you the puzzle.
- Finish with A on goal A and B on goal B after the same resolved move.
Worked example
If A has a wall immediately to its left while B has an open square to its left, pressing left keeps A still and moves B.
- That single blocked move changes the distance between the pieces.
- Repeat this idea at different walls or edges to line each piece up with its own route.
- Once both pieces are one move away from their goals in the same direction, the shared final move solves the board.
Strategy
- Do not plan routes for A and B separately; plan the pair as one combined board state.
- Look first for walls that affect only one piece. Those asymmetric blocks are your main tool.
- Work backward from the goals and ask where both pieces must stand before the final shared move.
- Use Undo freely. Lockstep has no timer or fail state, so experiments are part of solving.
Finishing the game
The game compares your move count with par. You can always keep working until both pieces reach their matching goals.
